Their own school, surveyed and rebuilt to scale

The program leads 8-11 year-olds to read the space they live in every day: their own school. There is no imaginary city to design, only the real building to survey, its shapes to recognize, and a scale model to build.

School level
Primary school
Age
8-11 years old
Structure
30 hours over 8 sessions. Groups of 3-4 children, each working on a real portion of the school building, identified through an on-site survey.

The programme

  1. Solids in hand

    4h

Exploration of the fundamental solids and construction of a cube and a cuboid in card.

  2. Projections and the real school

    4h

Introduction to the three views and survey of the school building, with a photographic record of the assigned section.

  3. The section on screen

    4h

Reconstruction of the section in the three-dimensional modelling environment.

  4. From solid to flat net

    4h

Drawing of the flat net and verification of its placement on the real plan.

  5. Finishing and logbook

    4h

Completion of the digital model and first entry in the logbook.

  6. Construction

    4h

Preparation of the common base and construction of the section in card.

  7. The school takes shape

    4h

Final placement of the sections and integration of the elements recorded during the survey.

  8. The school presents itself

    2h

Closing presentation by the groups and reconstruction of the work carried out.

The outcome

The full building model, assembled portion by portion, presented by the children on the final day.
